OMNIDIA, A BRIEF REVIEW
Diatoms are micro-organisms present in fresh waters ( rivers, lakes,...). Their concentration in the water is a excellent indicator of its purity and cleanness. Once a sample of the water that has to be studied is taken, the concentration of each specie of diatoms is measured and stocked in the software. The software then calculates different standard purity indices according to these concentrations as well as other information regarding the characteristics of the water studied. The software organisation is as follows :
Files
Management
:
The Diatom database stocked in the software is divided in :
Each specie is part of a type, which itself is part of a family.
Every record in the database is identified by a unique code of four letters.
For each specie, the software memorises a large number of data : complete name, references, family, type, sensibility and indicative values for the calculation of the indices. For each specie, it is also possible to record a scanned picture of the diatom.
Inventory
Management
All the inventories are grouped in one file, each of them identified by a unique number.
For each sample, the software memorises : date of the water sample, location, river, lake, PK, temperature, particularities...
Entering the data for each sample can be done in two different ways :
In both cases, species are always totalled and sorted by alphabetic order. Their number is unlimited.
At the end of each input, the program displays the totals and the 17 diatom indices indicating the water purity.
It also displays the ecological characteristics of the water : PH classes, salinity, nitrogen uptake, oxygen requirements, trophic state, moisture, saprobity, lifeform, current ...VanDam (1994), Lange-Bertalot (1978) et Hofmann. (1994) Denys (1991) Hakansson (1993) Renberg &Hellberg (1982) Eloranta (1990). (Download IDSE diaporama)
Some of the indices can be represented graphically.
Everything can be modified : details specific to each inventory (river, date, temperature...) or details specific to the concentration (add more, delete some, modify...). Everything (totals, value and indices) are then re-calculated.
It is also possible to duplicate a whole preparation (sample) in order to make simulation. The duplicate version will then have a different identification number.
Searches
and Editions :
Each sample can be printed individually : the detail of the species is listed with their complete name and their concentration (% of abundance)
A precise search for an existing sample can be made thanks to a multi criteria search engine ( Date, place, temperature, % of abundance of certain species...)
3 types of edition are then proposed :
CONCLUSION
:
Omnidia is a user friendly software thanks to its great conviviality.
The number of recordings is virtually unlimited for each file.
Each client can increase the existing database of species (provided with the software) with new inputs.
CHARACTERISTICS
:
Works on PC Windows XP - VISTA - 7 - 8 (32 or 64 bits)
Can interface with many other softwares : Excel, Word, Works,Lotus ...
